About Us

The Nigerian Women’s Group Manchester (NWGM) was established in 2001

The NWGM was established as a non-profit, non-religious, community-focused, and service-oriented organization. Our mission is to serve our local community, our country, and humanity by representing the interests of all Nigerian women, their families, and friends—culturally, socially, and economically. We aim to empower, enrich, and educate women while integrating cultural values into the upbringing of our children and youth.

Partnerships and Collaboration

Since our inception, the Nigerian Women’s Group Manchester has fulfilled our motto by creating opportunities for networking with other organizations. We have worked in partnership with:

  • Manchester City Council
  • Caribbean and African Health Network (CAHN)
  • African and Caribbean Mental Health Services (ACMHS)
  • African Unite Against Child’s Abuse (AFRUCA)
  • BASNET (BME Anti Slavery Network)
  • Nigerian Community Greater Manchester
  • GMCVO (Greater Manchester Voluntary Community Organisation)
  • Greater Manchester Ethnic Community Network
  • University of Manchester (Manchester Museum) on the history of African Arts and other educational and professional engagements
  • Sierra Leone Women’s Group
  • Other non-Nigerian organizations locally, nationally, and internationally, whose missions align with ours

Awards and Recognition

Individually, some of our members have been honored with awards for their community work. As a group, we received a Collaborations Recognition Award by CAHN in 2023. We were also nominated for The King’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2024 and received a Special Recognition Award by the High Sheriff of Greater Manchester for 2023-2024, for the impact Nigerian Women’s Group Manchester is making in the community and beyond.

Funding and Fundraising

Over the years, NWGM has received grants from various organizations, including Manchester City Council, Greater Manchester Mental Wellbeing Grant, Manchester Wellbeing Fund, and more recently, the National Lottery Community Fund.

We have also raised funds through events like novelty football matches with the Sierra Leone Women’s Group to support The Sickle Cell/Thalassemia Society, as well as fundraising for Breast Cancer and The British Heart Foundation.

Membership

Membership is open to all Nigerian women living in Greater Manchester and beyond, by birth or marriage, who are aged 18 years and above.
